Michaela Stiepel studierte Psychologie und arbeitete seit 1982 als Diplom-Psychologin im Strafvollzug der Jugendstrafanstalt Berlin. Nach 16 Jahren wechselte sie in den geschlossenen Männervollzug. Kurz nach dem schweren Erdbeben auf Haiti 2010 reiste sie nach Port-au-Prince, um im hiesigen Zentralgefängnis den Strafvollzug neu aufzubauen.
